Daniel J. Ahearn, LMFT, is the Director of Culture at Ascend Healthcare, where he leads clinical culture across residential and outpatient adolescent programs. He is the author of The Way Back Home: Healing Attachment Wounds with Your Teen and a certified clinician in Integrative Attachment Therapy, trained directly with Dr. Daniel P. Brown and Dr. David Elliott since 2018 and currently in the IAT Trainer program. He is delivering a talk at TEDx Century City this fall on the adolescent mental health crisis as an attachment crisis. He also maintains a private practice in Los Angeles focused on men, fathers, and parent-teen attachment repair, and is the creator of the R.E.A.L. Method, a four-step framework for rupture and repair between parents and adolescents. License LMFT 143021.

By the end of this session, you'll be able to

Describe the internal working model and explain why experiential rather than cognitive intervention is indicated in attachment repair.

Identify the five conditions of secure attachment and describe how each characteristically breaks down in the parent-adolescent relationship.

Differentiate at least three distinct functions of adolescent silence and withdrawal and select an attuned clinical response to each.

Apply a four-step rupture and repair sequence to a clinical vignette involving an adolescent and caregiver.

Describe at least three therapist behaviors that establish the clinical relationship as an active secure base, and identify how the clinician's own attachment history shapes responsiveness to adolescent clients.
